Max Landis Is Accused of Sexual Assault by His Former Girlfriend & Others #MeToo

The Daily Beast is reporting that Chronicle and Bright screenwriter Max Landis has been accused by at least 8 women of sexual assault and rape in a series of #MeToo allegations.

“If you have found my page via Max Landis, hi,” Landis’ ex-girfriend Ani Baker wrote. “I’m going to give you some direct info I wish I had gotten, because the experience/aftermath of this person is really destructive, and it will be riddled with pain and emotional work that you don’t need to spend your precious energy on.”

Baker told The Daily Beast that she quickly received supportive responses, many from other women who had their own Max Landis stories: “Women that I had never heard of who are like, I too was tortured by this person.”

“It gets worse every day,” Baker continued. “Every story I hear, I’m like, how did I think I knew this person? It’s horrifying. But I just feel like I need to be as honest as possible, since my goal in this is to help other people to not be in the same position.”

Pajiba reported earlier this year that, “This is not the Max Landis exposé you’re looking for.”

“It’s easy to prove that Max Landis is a shithead,” Pajiba’s Tori Preston reported. “He’s done all the legwork himself. Perhaps the most damning aspect of this story so far is the fact that Max has gone silent on social media since the rumors started ramping up. Which, as illustrated above, is not like him. But determining if he’s more than a semi-famous run-of-the-mill asshole is harder. I spoke with a lot of people who know him. I heard claims that they knew other women who were allegedly assaulted by Landis. I heard about behavior ranging from alleged public groping to (alleged) true horror stories, and even though they were off the record, the stories shared a lot of similarities. But the women in question often weren’t ready to talk to me directly — and they certainly weren’t ready to share their pain with the internet masses.”

“The women, some of whom were Landis’ ex-girlfriends, claim the screenwriter manipulated his relationships with them in order to get them into his inner circle, after which he allegedly physically and/or psychologically abused them. The allegations accuse Landis of fat shaming, choking, and/or sexually abusing his victims, said IndieWire.

Landis has not commented on the allegations, but his former friend and Chronicle director Josh Trank said in a tweet: “I 100% believe every word of this article about Max. I banned him from visiting principal photography of Chronicle, and I haven’t spoken to him since 2012. To read about the terror he’s inflicted on so many women since then makes me sick to my stomach. Heartbroken beyond measure.”

Meanwhile, Chloe Grace Moretz is set to star in the upcoming Shadow in the Cloud, penned by Max Landis and with Roseanne Liang directing. The Hollywood Reporter also reported that Idris Elba is in negotiations for the sci-fi thriller Deeper, also written by Landis.

Landis became well known for the viral YouTube video entitled The Death and Return of Superman.
