IT’S FRIDAY Welcome to #GayNrd’s daily round-up of cool things on the web for May 21, 2021. Art above by @mieillee. More below.

AT 73 Grace Jones Is Still The Most Fabulous Beauty Icon We Have. Vogue: “It’s hard not to feel delighted while perusing photographs of Grace Jones, who turns 73 today. Born in Jamaica, she quickly rose to prominence in the ’70s as a singer, model and actress, working with everyone from Helmut Newton and Guy Bourdin to Yves Saint Laurent – and famously frequenting Studio 54. With a powerful, disco-led aesthetic – from those wonderfully striking Philip Treacy headpieces to her lurex, sharp-shouldered suits and all manner of shine – she also pioneered a beauty look as fantastical, directional and uniquely her as her ensembles. She is, to put it simply, the epitome of fabulous.”

The cheekbones! The eyeshadow! The brows! The hair! Every element of her look is as distinctive as the last, and has paved the way for a number of enduring trends, in both the beauty and fashion worlds. In fact, of her iconic shaved hair, she once said: “It made me look more abstract, less tied to a specific race or sex or tribe. I was Black but not Black; woman, but not woman; American, but Jamaican; African, but science-fiction.” We are truly not worthy.

THE THURBER PRIZE goes to Damon Young’s Whatever Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Blacker. The Columbus Dispatch: Young, author of the memoir “What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Blacker,” has won the 2020 Thurber Prize for American Humor. Young was awarded the honor Friday night in a virtual ceremony presented by Thurber House, which is headquartered in the boyhood home of writer and humorist James Thurber for whom the prize is named. Young bested fellow finalists Dave Barry and Kira Jane Buxton.

He is a columnist for GQ and has been published in numerous publications including The New York Times, The Washington Post, New York Magazine, Time Magazine, Ebony and Jezebel magazines. Young describes himself as a “writer, critic, humorist, satirist and professional Black person.”

THE NATIVE SON AWARDS happened last night and founder Emil Wilbekin: “I want to start an organization to save my life.” #EssexHemphill  This opening line from Essex Hemphill’s poem “For My Own Protection” is exactly how I feel about creating and building the Native Son movement, community, and platform five years ago. Last night we celebrated the #NativeSonAwards honoring @lilnasx @alphonsodavid @darrencwalker @capehartj @stevencanals and @carsonwm all mavericks, innovators, leaders, and visionaries.

I like to call it #BlackGayExcellence We also honored three hitters with the Native Son Next Awards @codyrenard @kameron_depaul and @shawnfinniebeflourishing — they are the present and the future.

It’s a privilege to do this work of community building to inspire, empower, and celebrate Black gay and queer men. I am grateful to the ancestors and Brother’s like Mr. Hemphill who used their art as activism to remind us that we deserve to be loved, seen, and respected because we matter, our lives matter, and our profound impact on this world matters.

Thank you to @proctergamble and @damondjones for your partnership, thank you @morgan.stanley and @sandralrichards for your support, and thank @rayformayor and @crystalmccrary for Co-Chairing this magical evening. Thank you @prada and @reallymollylaub for making me look and feel so good.

There are so many more folx to thank so please watch the Native Son Awards on the Native Son Now Facebook or YouTube Channels (link in bio) and see the incredible presenters, performers, creatives, and allies who help make our community safer, stronger, and centered. I couldn’t do any of this without my team @yvonnemcnair_cmg ????

BEHIND THE SCENES OF Spider-Man: No Way Home. HypeBeast: While Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s release is still some time away, Ned’s actor Jacob Batalon has now offered fans a glimpse of what’s to come via a new Instagram post of some on-set images of himself and Tom Holland‘s Peter Parker.

The images were taken by Michelle “MJ” Jones actress Zendaya and show the two best friends in casual outfits hanging around school, bringing the duo back to the iconic locations where many scenes of the franchise were shot. In one of the images, Holland also appears to have injuries and scratches on his face, suggesting that some brawl may have taken place. Of course, Marvel Studios has been pretty tight-lipped about the plot of the upcoming film as usual, and other details about the movie remain scarce at this point aside from some big casting announcements, so fans should definitely stay tuned for more updates to come.

WANDERLUST Pilgrims, Prayers, and Pizza on Pacaya Volcano. The Atlantic: “Guatemala’s Pacaya volcano has been in a fairly active period since about 1961. Earlier this year, a new fissure vent opened, and rivers of lava began flowing out, threatening several nearby communities. The lava has been advancing slowly, and locals and tourists have been making visits to the lava flows. Some have come to take in the spectacle and make a few photos, but others have come on pilgrimages, offering prayers, hoping to slow Pacaya’s activity—and at least one person turned the red-hot rocks into his own pizza oven, cooking up a meal for other visitors.”

#FBF to Neil Gaiman Day. Book Riot: Few things create a bigger buzz across the bookternet than the release of a new Neil Gaiman book. Here at the Riot, Gaiman is one of our favorite writers, so we’ve decided that today, in honor of the release of his new novel The Ocean at the End of the Lane, it’s all Neil Gaiman all the time. Enjoy.

A COMPLIMENT can make someone’s day y’all.

CAPTAIN KIRK AT 90 ‘Take it easy, nothing matters in the end’: William Shatner at 90, on love, loss and Leonard Nimoy. The Guardian: Shatner has said that one person who really helped him through what he describes as the “searing pain” of [wife] Nerine’s death was his co-star and close friend, Leonard Nimoy, who played Spock in Star Trek, and who himself had struggled with alcoholism. Nimoy and Shatner were the same age and both Jewish, and I ask if their shared Judaism played a part in their friendship. I am Jewish, too, I add, in case the question sounds weird. “You don’t look Jewish,” says Shatner, but not even he can maintain a straight face when saying that obvious lie, and he collapses into giggles. “But yes – of course! Leonard was only four days younger than me, and Boston [where Nimoy was born] is a lot like Montreal [Shatner’s home town], these old cities with big buildings where the snow drifts through the streets. I think he had a much more Jewish upbringing than me; he learned to speak Yiddish and I did not. But the similarities between us were incredible.”

Shatner revealed in his 2016 book about Nimoy, Leonard: My Fifty-Year Friendship With a Remarkable Man, that the two men grew apart towards the end of Nimoy’s life, and he never understood why.
