TGIF It’s GayNrd’s star f***ing round-up of news, art, photography, anime, Yaoi, quotes, (poetry!), and ephemera from all corners of the interwebz for Friday April 30, 2021. Teen Titans illustration above via reddit.

Happy Birthday, Gal Gadot! Born April 30th 1985. The real life Wonder Woman was born in Rosh Ha’ayin, Israel. Her parents are Irit, a teacher, and Michael, an engineer. She served in the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) for two years, and won the Miss Israel title in 2004.

According to her bio on IMDB: Gal began modeling in the late 2000s, and made her film debut in the fourth film of the Fast and Furious franchise, Fast & Furious (2009), as Gisele. Her role was expanded in the sequels Fast Five (2011), and Fast & Furious 6 (2013), in which her character was romantically linked to Han Seoul-Oh (Sung Kang). In the films, Gal performed her own stunts. She also appeared in the 2010 films Date Night (2010) and Knight and Day (2010). In early December 2013, Gal was cast as Wonder Woman in the superhero team-up film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), and filming began in 2014 for a March 2016 release. Gadot received swordsmanship, Kung Fu kickboxing, Capoeira and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training in preparation for the role. As a result, her performance as the superhero, which is the first time for the character on film, was hailed as one of the best parts of the otherwise poorly-received film. The film is part of the DC Extended Universe, and Gadot plays the role again in the solo film Wonder Woman (2017), which was received very positively, and superhero team-up Justice League (2017).

A motorcycle enthusiast, Gadot owns a black 2006 Ducati Monster-S2R. She has been married to Israeli businessman Yaron Versano since September 28, 2008. They have two daughters.

In addition to recent outings in December 2020’s Wonder Woman 1984 and March’s Zack Snyder’s Justice League, The Hollywood Reporter says that Gadot is reteaming with Wonder Woman producers Charles Roven and Richard Suckle for a romance with a sci-fi twist. “Based on the debut novel of the same name from Catriona Silvey, Meet Me in Another Life follows Thora and Santi, kindred spirits that keep meeting in different versions of reality, where they could be friends, colleagues, lovers or enemies. They eventually come to a shocking revelation and must discover the truth of their mysterious attachment before their many lives come to a final end. The novel was published in the U.S. on April 27 via William Morrow, a division of HarperCollins, and will hit shelves in the U.K. from HarperVoyager on July 8.”

FLASHBACK FRIDAY to a Calvin and Hobbes classic by Bill Waterson!

THE RED CARPET is back! Variety’s Marc Malkin was on there in NYC for POSE! “Live. Work. Pooooozzzzze. It’s happening. I’m on a red carpet (actually, it’s light blue with a lot of glitter.). It feels so good to be back,” Malkin wrote on Facebook.

In his exclusive write up for Variety, Malkin said:

In what Hollywood hopes is a sign that live events are finally on the rebound, FX and 20th Television launched the third and final season of “Pose” with a red carpet premiere Thursday night in New York. The event was held indoors at Rose Theater at Jazz at Lincoln Center. The socially-distanced, 200-foot carpet included clear plastic barriers between photographers. Reporters conducting interviews were spaced about six feet apart. Talent and reporters were kept four feet apart. The carpet itself was light blue and flecked with sparkles. Walking the carpet were “Pose” stars Mj Rodriguez, Billy Porter, Dominique Jackson, Indya Moore, Hailie Sahar, Dyllón Burnside, Angel Bismark Curiel, Sandra Bernhard, Jason Rodriguez and Angelica Ross. Series co-creators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Steven Canals were also in attendance as were Season 3 guest stars Jeremy McClain, and Noma Dumezweni.

Malkin added: There were some surprising moments during the remarks from cast and producers before the screening. Janet Mock, “Pose” executive producer, writer and director, took to the stage with eyebrow-raising remarks about the show and her personal and professional relationships with cast members and producers that made for squirmy moments for the guests of honor. For one, Mock complained about her compensation for her work on the series.

“I want to get paid more,” she said. “Why am I making $40,000 an episode, huh? Do you know who the fuck I am?”

BEEF Page 6: SNL alum Leslie Jones seems to be involved in a protracted beef with standup circuit stalwart Anthony Jeselnik — which blew up spectacularly at a comedy club earlier this week. Jeselnik said on his podcast Wednesday that he and another comic — whom he didn’t name — have hated each other for years, adding that he thinks the bad blood may have started at LA’s Comedy Store when Jeselnik refused to give up his stage time when they asked for it. And he said that the feud reared its head at a different LA club where he was headlining this week — after the comic in question showed up unannounced and asked management to go onstage “for five to ten minutes” before him.“Within five minutes [of their set], I understand what has happened to me,” he said on the “Jeselnik and Rosenthal Vanity Project,” adding, “They are not doing [five to ten minutes] and that they are going to go as long as they can, strictly to f–k with me — strictly to big-time me.”

Jeselnik said that management at the club, Supernova Comedy, told him the anonymous comic had even refused to introduce him before his set. “The exact phrase was, ‘They don’t think they can introduce you with enthusiasm,’” he said, adding, “Which means that not only am I getting bumped, but I don’t get to go next. Someone else has to go after that [so they can introduce me onstage]. So I’m going almost an hour later.”

Meanwhile, a Reddit user solved the mystery of the comic’s identity. “Everyone saw Jeselnik at the venue while walking in so we knew he was there,” user BigStrongCiderGuy wrote on the social media site, “Leslie Jones [was] a surprise guest in the middle [of the show]. She does some material for the first 15 minutes, big red light comes on [to signal the end of her time], then she just starts doing crowd work for the next 25 minutes.”

They added that after two more acts, they figured Jeselnik wasn’t going to be headlining the show after all, and went to ask a member of club staff what happened.

WAIT, WUT? Exclusive via Giant Freakin’ Robot: “Jon Bernthal and Tom Holland have helped to shape definitive versions of The Punisher and Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With The Punisher now back under the banner of Marvel Studios, fans have been wondering if the two characters would ever cross paths as they have a storied history in the comics. With The Punisher being such a violent character and Spider-Man attempting to appeal to all audiences, most have given up on these characters meeting up and possibly squaring off in a momentous event. However, we have some very good news for those hoping for a superhero showdown between them. Giant Freakin Robot was given exclusive info from one of our trusted and proven insider sources that says Jon Bernthal and Tom Holland will face off against each other as The Punisher and Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We were not able to confirm what the exact project would be but our informant is confident that Marvel is developing a way to have these two characters do battle against each other. And there is even background between these actors that helps to solidify why they want to have their characters share screen time.

Jon Bernthal and Tom Holland actually helped each other with their Marvel auditions, so there is real personal history between the actors and their connection to these characters. That certainly would help highlight the deep history between The Punisher and Spider-Man. The skull-wearing vigilante was actually introduced in The Amazing Spider-Man #129, so he owes his existence to the wall-crawling superhero.

The fact that the two have not been able to meet up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been a tease that fans have been hoping to see realized. Now that Marvel Studios was able to regain the rights to The Punisher from Netflix, the door certainly seems open for that classic match-up to finally be seen on the big screen.

JOE’S GOT THEIR BACK The Advocate: In his first address to a joint session of Congress, President Joe Biden ranged over a wide variety of issues but took time to call for passage of the Equality Act and give a shout-out to transgender Americans. After promoting his proposed American Jobs Plan, American Families Plan, police reform, and other measures, he said, “I also hope Congress can get to my desk the Equality Act to protect the rights of LGBTQ Americans.”

“To all the transgender Americans watching at home — especially the young people who are so brave — I want you to know that your president has your back.”

CRUCIAL Elliot Page explained to Oprah why it was ‘crucial’ for him to come out as trans. Page Six: Page said he felt it was “crucial and important” for him to share his coming out story amid the backlash toward the transgender community. In a preview clip from his first televised Q&A as part of Oprah Winfrey’s “Oprah Conversations” series, Page, 34, discussed his process in sharing such personal info with the masses for the first time. “I was expressing this to people in my life much before posting that letter and telling people for the first time and knowing I wanted a moment to become comfortable in myself and to be able to get to that point. For me, in this time we’re in right now and especially with this horrible backlash we’re seeing towards trans people, particularly trans youth, it really felt imperative to do so.”

The Umbrella Academy actor went on to describe feeling “closeted for so long,” adding, “I came out as gay right before my 27th birthday and up until then I had pretty much never even touched someone outside who I was in love with. “I think any sensation of feeling that again, there was just no way I could do it,” he went on, adding that it had “felt important and selfish for myself and my own well-being and my mental health.”

Page said that given his platform and his privilege and knowing the struggles that people are facing, it felt “crucial and important” for him to share that. In an accompanying Vanity Fair interview, Page said he felt like he’s “really able to just exist.”
