Since the start of her career in the early 2000’s, Taylor Swift has released nine studio albums. She’s explored different genres, navigated through her fair share of controversy, and provided us with some of our favorite music to stream.
But before we embark on the new era of Taylor’s Version re-recordings, we wanted to suss out which of her original albums resonates the most with Swifties across the country.
We combined Spotify streaming data and Google Trends data to find out which Taylor Swift album has each state “feelin’ 22.”¹
America’s favorite album overall is Folklore
Released in July of 2020, Swift’s Folklore is the most searched album in 25 states. Known as her “quarantine album,” Folklore was released out of the blue and hit us all in our pandemic feels. It earned Album of the Year at the 2021 Grammys and secured Taylor Swift her own special on Disney+. With over 2.2 billion streams on Spotify, this moody album is loved from Hawaii to Maine.
Lover wins for most streamed album
Lover, which has a whopping 3.4 billion streams on Spotify, is Swift’s most-streamed album overall. The album features artists like Brendan Urie and the Chicks. It was the most searched album in nine states. It’s also important to note that Lover is Taylor’s first album that she fully owns.²
The best songs for your mood
For each song on Taylor’s top five most-played albums, we analyzed danceability, energy, tempo, and valence to determine which songs would be the best for a few different occasions.
Methodology
To find the most searched Taylor Swift album in each state, we calculated the top five most played albums on Spotify by adding up the total number of plays of each song on her albums (not including any of the live or deluxe versions of the albums). We used Google Trends to determine which state searched for which of the top five most played albums in the past year, then filtered the results by the “Arts & Entertainment” category.
For each song in each of the top five most played albums, we used the Spotify API to pull the data on danceability, energy, tempo, and valence.
To rank cry-worthy songs, 25% of the score was determined by the danceability rating of the song, 25% was determined by the energy rating, 25% was determined by the tempo, and 25% was determined by the valence. Each metric was normalized on a 0–1 scale with 1 corresponding to the measurement that would most positively affect the final score. These adjusted measurements were then added together with the weights mentioned above to get a score out of 100.
To rank revenge songs, 35% of the score was determined by the energy rating of the song, 25% was determined by the tempo, and 40% was determined by the valence.
