Super Gay Boys Assemble: In a Historic First 3 Mainstream Comics Are Headlined By LGBT Characters

Share

We live in historic times for the comic book world.

With the announcement that Jonathan Kent, the current Superman is bisexual coming so close on the heels of the announcement that Robin (Tim Drake) is as well, and the  new Aquaman Jackson Hyde is gay, there are three officially canon LGBT DC characters with their own titles.

Fans on Reddit commented: The first one is Jon Kent, son of Clark Kent and Lois Lane. He was introduced as a kid in 2016 and was recently aged up to 17. He’s currently the main Superman (because Superman is doing his own stuff at other planets in another series), and apparently he’s going to be coming out as bi in an issue that comes out tomorrow. His current series, Superman: Son of Kal-El is amazing and I hugely recommend it.

The second one is Tim Drake, the third Robin (aka. the Robin from the 90s). He, too, came out as bi in a recent series after having all female romantic interests and has been dating a guy. I don’t know what series he’s in right now, though.

The third one is Jackson Hyde, Aqualad (that is, Aquaman’s sidekick?) based on the one created by Greg Weisman in the Young Justice animated series (which is amazing and was recently revived after years of cancellation). Young Justice’s Aqualad was bi/gay (I don’t think they make it clear), and the comics version, Jackson Hyde, was just made gay. I have only read one recent comic issue with him (Aquaman: The Becoming), but his design is amazing.

  • Kind of funny if all 3 are bi, not gay. I mean, sure bi-erasure is a bad thing, but it almost seems like DC thinks bi is better than gay because … i dunno, bi is less gay than gay? 😀 Plus they can still ship them with women.
  • Regardless, “I’ll take it!” (which apparently has been said by all three of these heroes) 😉

Ultimately everyone seems happy with the representation but floated if it’s not more than a coincidence that Jon and Tim are bi. After all Conner Kent and Tim were shipped a long time ago, why not Jon/Tim?

Can the recent revelation of both Tim and Jon being bi be a setup for this relationship as canon in the future?

I mean neither of their current love interests seem to be hanging around for long.

Tim/Conner has been a fan ship for a decade so maybe this could be the DC’s version and answer of Robin/Superboy being romantically involved?

I barely read any issues after HiC so I don’t know whether Conner is to be brought back to existence, would be a cool thing if he ultimately comes back like how they did with Jason in the mid-2000s.

Tim will tell.
