‘Star Trek 4’ is Engaged at Paramount

The Kelvin timeline Star Trek universe launched when Spock Prime traveled back in time to stop the renegade Romulan Nero from destroying Vulcan in director JJ Abram’s 2009 reboot of the film franchise is coming back for a fourth installment under the writer/director Noah Hawley.

The Trek film franchise which seemed DOA after the dud that was Star Trek Beyond, and any talks of a sequel revolved around a proposed and highly secretive story by Quentin Tarantino got a new set of eyeballs given the success of CBS’s All Access streaming series Star Trek: Discovery.

Discovery proved to be a monumental hit and renewed interest in Trek among a whole new generation, spawning its own spin-offs including the upcoming Picard, a Below the Decks cartoon, a series set at Starfleet academy, and soon enough a series featuring the five-year mission under Captain Christopher Pike, Number One, and Spock  after fans demanded it after actors Anson Mount and Ethan Peck’s depictions of Pike and Spock blew people away in season 2 of Discovery.

Deadline reports: “Paramount Pictures is in final talks with Noah Hawley to write and direct the next Star Trek film. Through his 26 Keys production banner he will produce along with JJ Abrams and his Bad Robot banner. I don’t have too much more to report on the film, but my understanding is Hawley will helm the fourth film in this iteration of the venerable franchise, with the Enterprise crew led by Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg and Karl Urban. The studio separately is working on a Star Trek spinoff that Quentin Tarantino is eyeing to direct and has been working on with Abrams. This one would likely carry an R rating, with a screenplay by The Revenant scribe Mark L. Smith.”
