Sha’Carri Richardson Suspended from Olympics After Testing Positive for Cannabis

Share

According to Reuters, The New York Times and Jamaica Gleaner, US 100m champion Sha’Carri Richardson could face a 30-day suspension after failing a drug screening for a prohibited substance. The 21-year-old qualified for the 2020 games at the Olympic Trials in June after running the 100m final in 10.86 seconds.

The New York Times: Richardson, 21, won the women’s 100-meter race at the U.S. track and field trials in Oregon last month, but her positive test automatically invalidated her result in that marquee event. It is unclear whether she will appeal the test result and the disqualification, or how long her suspension will be. It could be as short as one month. The suspension was confirmed by two people with knowledge of the test results who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the situation.

George M. Johnson: There are folks serving 3rd strike LIFE SENTENCES for weed. And y’all on here talking about “Sha’Carri should’ve known better” No. Weed shouldn’t be illegal or a banned substance is the problem.

things i’m thinking about sha’carri

i think i was as excited about her as i’ve been about any “new” athlete since i first saw kyrie hoop. (if you know me, that’s saying…something.)

i think that excitement ain’t wane.
i think i want my son and my daughter to look up to her, as proof of the precious and beautiful nexus of industriousness, inventiveness, ferocity, ingenuity, and grit.
i think that’s just a bunch of words to describe blackness.
i think i look up to her too.
i think she’s young.
i think she’s handling her fuck up like a grown up.
i think black athletes are disproportionately burdened with the sort of shit that compels them–us–to self-medicate.
i think that burden is america’s fault. the world’s fault.
i think its no coincidence that as the world crumbles, we’ve seen three superstar black athletes this year–kyrie, sha’carri, and naomi osaka (forgive me if i’m forgetting anyone)–prioritize their mental health over their occupations.
i think we’re going to see more of that.
i think–well, i hope–we eventually consider, in a sports context, mental health “injury” the way we do physical injuries. no one bats an eye if an athlete misses time because of a ligament sprain or a broken bone. i hope that same grace is extended to athletes needing time to get their head/nerves/anxiety right too.
i think if this happened in a sports context, it would trickle down, and mental health maintenance would be less stigmatized.
i think that as tight as we are about sha’carri, we don’t have to lie. weed helps pain management, not exactly like how advil does, but it does. pain management helps recovery. quicker recovery helps you train longer and harder. longer and harder training helps you get bigger/faster/stronger. she ain’t use it for that reason–and wasn’t suspended for that, but for using a “substance of abuse.” but…i just think we’re weird as fuck about drugs—how we feel about them, what we’ll choose to admit about them—and this reminds me of that. we ain’t gotta say “weed gives you absolutely no benefit as an athlete” for “weed shouldn’t be banned” to be true.
i think, all that said, i still want them to give her a pass.
i think that’s just me being selfish, though, cause i wanna see her run.
