Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers Thursday and reacted to his inauguration photo, saying he had no idea it would become a meme sensation overnight.

Sanders said that the woman who made the mittens is a very nice school teacher from Essex, Vermont (named Jen Ellis) who has been overwhelmed with orders.

To which Meyers said that she struck him as the kind of person who would make Bernie Sanders mittens, “Because I read somewhere that her reaction to all the orders for them was to say ‘Look I work, I’m a mother, I don’t have time to make you mittens.'”

“There’s no possible way I could make 6,000 pairs of mittens, and every time I go into my email, another several hundred people have emailed me,” Ellis told the Jewish Insider. “I hate to disappoint people, but the mittens, they’re one of a kind and they’re unique and, sometimes in this world, you just can’t get everything you want.”

Then, promising to ask more serious questions, Meyers said people have been asking what was in the manila envelope, to which Sanders responded, laughing, “I’d love to tell you Seth. But it’s top secret.”

Sanders who, although far more progressive politically than President Joe Biden, says he knows Biden sees and understands the numerous cascading crises affecting Americans and that he could turn out to be a far more progressive president than perhaps he intended and with their support.

Sanders also said that while he believes the Trump followers who committed insurrection on January 6th are fanatical white supremacists beyond reproach he is willing to reach out to anyone else who voted for Trump who are hurting economically and in all kinds of other ways.
