It’s rumored to be the most lucrative deal ever offered by the streaming service.

Sandman, created by Neil Gaiman, and published by DC Comics has been bouncing around Hollywood for a while. It seems that the studios have taken a cue from HBO’s execution of Game of Thrones and see the value in the story being told as a long format TV show.

Deadline, who broke the story on the deal, said: It’s official. Netflix has given an 11-episode series order to The Sandmanbased on Neil Gaiman’s DC comic, from Warner Bros TV.

Allan Heinberg (Wonder Woman, Grey’s Anatomy) is slated to write and serve as showrunner on the series. Gaiman will executive produce alongside David Goyer.

“We’re thrilled to partner with the brilliant team that is Neil Gaiman, David S. Goyer and Allan Heinberg to finally bring Neil’s iconic comic book series, The Sandman, to life onscreen,” said Channing Dungey, VP, Original Series, Netflix. “From its rich characters and storylines to its intricately built-out worlds, we’re excited to create an epic original series that dives deep into this multi-layered universe beloved by fans around the world.”

More than three years after New Line’s failed attempt to turn the graphic novel into a feature film, Netflix has signed what sources describe as a massive financial deal with Warner Bros. Television to adapt the best-seller into a live-action TV series. Sources familiar with the pact note it is the most expensive TV series that DC Entertainment has ever done. The drama has officially been picked up with an 11-episode order.

The Netflix take represents the first Sandman TV series after numerous efforts to adapt Gaiman’s horror, fantasy and mythology tale about Morpheus, the Lord of Dreams, and the Endless, the powerful group of siblings that includes Destiny, Death, Destruction, Despair, Desire and Delirium (as well as Dream).

Gaiman teased his fans on Twitter about the eminent deal. When asked by a fan named Bonnie on Twitter: “So this article is untrue? Or is the Sandman series just in talks? As a diehard Sandman fan myself, I’ve been dreaming (pun intended) for a properly made series like Good Omens and American Gods.”

Gaiman responded that it was true-ish.

Deadline concluded:

Once closed, this will be yet another franchise to add to Gaiman’s TV arsenal. He currently has American Gods on Starz as well as the new Amazon series Good Omens. The titular character of Lucifer appeared in The Sandman comics — and both will now be on Netflix.

Sandman charted a long, poetic story arc over its original 75-issue run that followed the adventures of Morpheus, lord of dreams and member of a pantheon of immortal beings called The Endless who personify certain universal concepts that, along with dream, includes death, desire, destiny, delirium, despair, and destruction.

Netflix declined to comment about the deal.
