Meet the Bara Brother Redefining Gay Masculinity Through His Art #NSFW

Spread the love

The term bara is used to refer to a genre of Japanese comic art and media known within Japan as gay manga. Unlike the more well known and popularized Yaoi, bara is made for and by MSM (Men who have sex with men).

Bara is occasionally used interchangeably with yaoi (also known as boys’ love or BL), although yaoi traditionally was written by women primarily for women although that’s not always the case today.Bara can vary in visual style and plot, but typically features masculine men with varying degrees of muscle, body fat, and body hair, akin to bear or bodybuilding culture. Bara is usually porny.

The term bara is not used in Japan. In this non-Japanese context, bara is used to describe a wide breadth of Japanese and Japanese-inspired gay erotic media, including illustrations published in early Japanese gay men’s magazines, western fan art, and gay pornography featuring human actors.

Tom of Finland would be considered bara for instance.

One of the hottest bara artists on social media goes by the Twitter handle Qaisan. He talls me via directct message that he is Kaisan aka Kaisan and that secretly, “I’m from Russia.”

Not only does a survey of  Kaisan’s art check off every touch stone of bara mentioned but may be the best practitioner of the genre on the web.

Here are examples of his art that check of the bara list of requisite features.
