Marvel’s Gaslighting Problem Summed Up In One Hysterical TikTok

Share

Marvel’s got a gaslighting problem that I’m sure they think is a hysterical inside joke with fans and summed up in a TikTok posted by @khan_btw on Thursday.

@khan_btwThat would be the funniest thing ever???? ##khanbtw ##fyp ##marvel ##mcu ##cap ##sam ##bucky ##fantastic4♬ Pumped Up Kicks(Bridge & Law Remix) – Foster The People

A fan confusing the new Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four logo reveal with the new Captain America 4 logo hot off the heels of Sam Wilson becoming cap on Falcon and the Winter Soldier is funny by itself.

But there’s a difference between being in on the joke and being the joke and they sort of can’t fuck around any more because of their “clever inside joke” in having Evan Peters appear as Pietro Maximoff in episode five of WandaVision.

Ok first, for those who do not know: the MCU version of Quicksilver, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, was killed in his first cinematic outing. And despite starring in three X-Men movies (Days of Future PastApocalpyse, and Dark Phoenix) Evan Peters’ version of Quicksilver he’s been used for comic relief for the most part.

Because here’s what I and many fans thought,. and legitimately I think, GayNrd wrote at the time: Wanda opens the door to reveal Her dead brother, Pietro Maximoff, aka Quicksilver. Except it’s not the same Pietro who appeared with Wanda in Avengers: Age of Ultron, the one played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Nope, it’s the other Pietro, the one played by Evan Peters in the X-Men movies. An Avenger opened the door for a literal member of the X-Men, and with that the actual biggest crossover event in entertainment franchise history just began.

To recap why it’s such a big deal that the X-Men’s Quicksilver is now in the MCU, we have to go back to 2019, when Disney acquired 21st Century Fox for $71.3 billion. At the time, 21st Century Fox contained the film studio 20th Century Fox (among other properties like the Fox TV network and National Geographic. They’re not important right now). 20th Century Fox had the rights to a huge chunk of Marvel characters, including the X-Men and the Fantastic Four. They made X-Men movies, Disney had Avengers movies, and never the twain could meet, legally.

And it wasn’t just me. According to CBR.com, the X-Men star has joined WandaVision in an unspecified role. Apparently, Peters landed the role late last year and filmed his scenes shortly after. Who could he be playing? Well, since WandaVision will be looking to open the multiverse, it’s quite possible that he’ll be reprising his X-Men role i.e. Peter. Then there will be two Quicksilvers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Pietro is also rumoured to be returning to the franchise. Or, due to the change of hands after the deal between Fox and Disney and talks of recasting the X-Men characters, there’s a fair chance that Peters is playing a whole new character.That said, Peters as an actor is loved by all due to his performances in American Horror StoryPoseAmerican Animals, and Kick-Ass. So, Marvel fans are excited about the notion that he’s joining the franchise in any capacity. Check out the reactions here:

So introducing Peters in the way he was, so shortly after Marvel Studios finally getting the valuable rights of what are arguably their most lucrative comic-book property —  meaning The X-Men — as well as the family at the heart and soul of the Marvel Universe, The Fantastic Four, and trick us,  or rather make it a cheap gimmick used by Agatha Harkness, well I, I mean, er fans, never forget that isht.

Marvel, you’ve been put on notice.
