“As I joined ACT UP, that one example with Dixie became a couple dozen examples of dykes who were about the same age. Definitely older than I was, who were there based on this impulse to take care of their gay brothers. They were losing their friends but also had this movement memory that gay guys like myself had none of. They had been through the battle with the Equal Rights Amendment. They had been with the reproductive rights movement. Some of them had been part of the post-Stonewall radical gay activism during the first few years after Stonewall, some of them were with the anti-[Vietnam] war movement, and they had lots of experience with civil disobedience. So that allowed ACT UP to hit the ground running. We didn’t have to start from scratch. We had this movement memory transplanted mostly by these lesbians. That allowed us to take to the streets immediately, and do it as radically as we’d like in a semi-safe way, and that was absolutely crucial. ACT UP would not be ACT UP if it weren’t for this beautiful combination of desperate gay men and wise lesbians coming together to fight this together.” Peter Staley in an interview in the latest issue of Positively Aware.

GOOD ADVICE A recent response in the ever popular Dear Abby advice column is going viral.  DEAR ABBY: I’m a 16-year-old girl, and I’ve been struggling a little bit. My family is super-Christian. They believe that members of the LGBTQ community are sinful because of who they are. I do not agree. I have a small group of friends. Two of them have come out to me as bi and gender-fluid. When my family talks about gay people, they say horrible things. I want to tell them what they are saying is wrong and that the mean comments they make apply to my friends, but I’m afraid to give them my opinion. I’m unsure whether I should say anything at all. Can you help me? — KEEPING QUIET IN CALIFORNIA
DEAR KEEPING QUIET: You are free to think the way you do, and to support your friends. However, you are not likely to change the way your parents feel on this subject. Your friends have come out to you, but not to your parents. If you out them to your parents, they may forbid you from seeing those friends. In two years, you will be 18, legally an adult and more able to express your thoughts with fewer negative ramifications. If I were you, I’d wait.
VASECTOMY CHALLENGE LJ Castro on Facebook:  Today I made a big decision. A lot of people called me crazy because of how young I am for getting this procedure. Today I got a vasectomy. It was quick, and painless. Oh and INSURANCE COVERS IT, if don’t have insurance it’s only $700. Women’s birth control kills their body and a lot of times can have bad side effects. And the crazy thing is vasectomies are reversible.
Not only that, there are so many kids that would love to be adopted and honestly that’s my plan. Until then I have my dog who is my son in my eyes. Guys stop being selfish, women go through a lot, get the procedure, especially if you’re just getting women pregnant without being in their lives. I’m not crazy I’m fair and understanding. (Excuse any grammatical errors, I still feel loopy from the anesthesia).
IT’S A WRAP Orla Brady: I have wrapped on #StarTrekPicard season 2 and it is time to take off my beloved pointy ears alas. Not sure I like my own ears anymore… #StarTrek @StarTrek #Laris #cheekyfeckers

THE GAY MEN’S PRIDE FLAG You may be seeing this a lot on social media. Anecdotally it seems to be a having a resurgence in popularity.  It is lesser known pride flag but is a revisit of an earlier gay men’s pride flag from the 70s that featured a range of blue tones. That version was problematic to some because it used colors that were stereotypical of the gender binary. This updated flag is inclusive of a much wider range of gay men, including but not limited to transgender, intersex, and gender nonconforming men.

THAT’S SO RAVEN Actress and That’s So Raven star Raven-Symoné said she told Disney she wanted her character on the spin-off Raven’s Home to remain straight. Speaking to the “Pride” podcast, Symone said that Disney offered to make the spin-off character a lesbian to accommodate Raven-Symone, who is gay in real life.

“There was a conversation before the series started, and I was asked the question, ‘Would you like Raven Baxter to be a lesbian?’ And I said, no. I said no,” Symoné said. Symone said she is proud to be gay, but “The reason I said no wasn’t because I wasn’t proud of who I was, or I didn’t want to represent the LGBTQ+ community in any way,” Symoné said.. “It was because Raven Baxter is Raven Baxter is Raven Baxter. And Raven Baxter is a character that I was proud to play, even if she is straight, cisgender — I don’t mind — let her have her moment.”
