FEELS LIKE SUMMER Today was that day that always catches me off guard when when in the course of 24 hours we are suddenly hurtled into the heat of summer. Oh well. “Summer is coming,” by @xelgot.

FISHING was such a huge part of my childhood. Especially bluefish in the Long Island Sound. This striking image from Mikey Bucktails ⚓️ evoked nostalgia.

WAKING UP WITH Wil Wheaton is a wonderful way to start the day. “This morning’s bedhead wants to be stereotyped. It wants to be classified.”

NAOMI Creator Brian Michael Bendis enthusiastically updated fans about Naomi which is coming to The CW this fall. On Tuesday Deadline reported: The first look at the CW’s Naomi, Ava DuVernay’s new superhero DC drama, and All American spinoff Homecoming. The footage is contained in a trailer released by The CW that includes a look at returning shows as well, set to Coldplay’s single “Higher Power.”

Naomi, the network’s latest DC adaptation, comes from DuVernay and Arrow writer and co-exec producer Jill Blankenship. Based on the eponymous comic book series that debuted in 2019, co-written by Brian Michael Bendis and David F. Walker and illustrated by breakout artist Jamal Campbell, the show follows a teen girl’s journey from her small northwestern town to the heights of the multiverse. When a supernatural event shakes her hometown to the core, Naomi sets out to uncover its origins, and what she discovers will challenge everything we believe about our heroes.

Bendis concluded: The story of Naomi is incredibly unique. And her character is one of kind! I hope everyone can see themselves in Naomi. Let’s gooooo!” ♥️????????????

THE HISTORY of ACT UP Is recounted in The Paris Review. Sarah Schulman’s new book Let the Record Show: A Political History of ACT UP New York, 1987–1993 is the culmination of twenty years of research, interviews, and writing on the history of American AIDS activism and the grassroots organization ACT UP. In this excerpt, Schulman describes the impact of OutWeek, the first major national publication to call itself a lesbian and gay magazine, through some of its founding members.

I DON’T KNOW who needs to hear this today, but you’re welcome.

POOLSIDE eBay executive Bradford Shellhammer’s beautiful Catskills home now has a pool. He reflects on a childhood where his family could not afford one. “I never had a pool as a kid. And while I am still battling the algae and the muck at the bottom, even without being able to swim yet, there’s something oddly peaceful about being next to a pool. It calms me just looking at it.”

THIS BOY couldn’t be cuter.

A BRIEF HISTORY of gay pride.

SUPER BLOOD MOON the rare event is here! The New York Times: “From Brazil to Alaska, California to Indonesia, people with the right view of the celestial phenomenon marveled as their moon, usually a predictable, pale, Swiss-cheese-like round in the sky, was transformed into a fierce, red giant. As one Twitter user, words failing, put it: “Man I’m in love with this urghhh.”

The striking display was the result of two simultaneous phenomena: a supermoon (when the moon lines up closer than normal to our planet and appears to be bigger than usual), combined with a total lunar eclipse, or blood moon (when the moon sits directly in the Earth’s shadow and is struck by light filtered through the Earth’s atmosphere).

“A little bit of sunlight skims the Earth’s atmosphere,” said Brad Tucker, an astrophysicist and cosmologist based at the Australian National University in Canberra, the country’s capital. He said this creates the effect of “sunrise and sunset being projected onto the moon.”

I HAD this conversation today.

BUY SOME LOX Jake Gyllenhaal is getting the Actor’s Fund’s back with new hoodie line.

He wrote on Insta: “Nothing like a big bag of bagels and LOX! I designed a hoodie with my friends at Russ & Daughters, the proceeds from the sale of every hoodie will go to the Actors Fund’s efforts to support NYC theater workers impacted by the pandemic. It’s made from scratch in NYC from the highest quality raw material and local craftsmanship. When you wear this hoodie, you’ll be supporting three communities we care about: food, theater, and New York City. You may not know the incredible crew of people that make the theaters run. You may not know how tough the past year and a half has been for them, but I can tell you that nothing in the theater works without them. Help how you can. Buy a sweatshirt if you can, and know that you are supporting the real stars of the show! (Disclaimer: Bagels were harmed in the taking of these photos).

CRANK YANKERS returns tonight. I had no idea it was still running but it still has Wanda Sykes so check it out! On Comedy Central  at 10:30/9:30c.

THIS is what trans ❤️ looks like: Elliot Page is diving headfirst into the summer, and we all should take notes!

On the heels of his widely celebrated interview with Oprah last month, the 34-year-old actor publicly documented a huge milestone in his personal trans journey on Instagram. In a post that has amassed more than 2 million likes in just a day, Page can be seen in a baseball cap, neck chain, burgundy swim trunks, and a huge smile. “Trans bb’s first swim trunks #transjoy #transisbeautiful,” he captioned the photo.

Page’s display of unbridled happiness is especially poignant amidst 2021’s seemingly non-stop headlines about anti-trans legislation and senseless killings.

MEET NORTHSTAR Marvel’s first openly gay superhero. Created by Chris Claremont and John Byrne, the character first appeared in X-Men #120 (April 1979) as a member of the Canadian superhero team, Alpha Flight

Born in Quebec, Canada, Jean-Paul Beaubier is a mutant with the ability to travel at superhuman speeds, fly, and project photonic energy blasts. Although the character was initially depicted as a member of Alpha Flight, he has appeared regularly as a member of the X-Men since joining the team of mutants in Uncanny X-Men #414 (December 2002). One of the first openly gay superheroes in American comic books, and the first openly gay character to come out in a book published by Marvel Comics. He married his husband, Kyle Jinadu, in Astonishing X-Men #51 (June 2012), which was the first depiction of a same-sex wedding in mainstream comics.

PRIDE IN A FASHION This year more corporations have officially recognized gay pride and the level of corporate sponsorship is exponential. The deluge of announcements can make you cynical but one company stands out from the crowd: Rhones. The fashion company has beautifully rendered the essence of pride in the the subtle and simple designs they employ like the ensemble below which is our fave.

Rhones aims to celebrate all LGBTQ+ individuals through this collection, featuring joggers, hoodies, shirts, shorts, and accessories in pastel tie dyes, as well as in white and navy with rainbow hues. Additionally, the brand will make a $10,000 donation from the sales of this collection to Mental Health America, helping the development of their LGBTQ+-focused resources and initiatives. MILESTONE MEDIA AND DWAYNE MCDUFFIE’S LEGACY  Fans may have seen a glimpse of the returning Milestone Comics during last year’s DC FanDome virtual convention, but the release of Milestone Returns #0: Infinite Edition reveals new details of the planned relaunch, including rewriting Static’s origin in the Big Bang event. Two of the architects behind Milestone’s revival are Reginald Hudlin and Denys Cowan, who lend their writing and artistic talents, respectively, on Milestone’s biggest titles. CBR asked fellow Milestone founder Denys Cowan this question in an interview.

Cowan: Dwayne McDuffie was such an important part of what we did. He was such a linchpin in how we started and the architect of so much that happened with Milestone, that it’s impossible to continue without the DNA of what he did, in almost everything that we’ve done and what we’re doing now. So in that sense, yeah, we’re continuing the legacy of Dwayne McDuffie, because it’s inherent in all the characters that came out of that first incarnation of the Dakota Universe. You’ll notice some things. You’ll see [it] on the first Hardware cover. You’ll see some tributes to Dwayne in unexpected places. Our fallen colleague is never far from our hearts ever. He’s very close to what we do. Charlotte, his widow, is wonderful. We’re all good with her, and the McDuffie family and Milestone will go forward in the future and keep forging our path together. That’s what’s going on with the family. That’s what’s going on with Dwayne’s legacy. It’s solid with us.

McKellen turned 82 years old, so it’s as good a time as any for fans to celebrate the actor and his body of work on social media. A veteran of the screen whose career has spanned for more than six decades and still going strong, some of McKellen’s most popular roles include playing Magneto in the X-Men movies and Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings.

30 HELENS AGREE that The Kids in the Hall has started production in Toronto. The A/V:“The show your grandparents wouldn’t let you watch is back,” tweeted Foley. “Filming has begun on The Kids in the Hall’s 8-episode Amazon Original series in Toronto.”

Foley also included a picture of the Kids all in the same space, so don’t expect the kind of Josh Gad-hosted Zoom reunion we’ve had to deal with for the last year. However, we could imagine Mark McKinney trying to squish heads via webcam being kind of funny.

The last time we saw the Kids In The Hall was Death Comes To Town, an eight-part miniseries from 2010. Not so much a sketch series as a long-running narrative about a Canadian town’s bid to host the 2028 Summer Olympics, which is thrown for a bit of a loop when, well, Death comes to town. Before that, the Kids movie Brain Candy came out in 1996, to the delight of Kids obsessives and the disgust of everyone else.

LOVE ME PLEASE  is a biography in comics of the amazing rock singer Janis Joplin, Fed by the thirst for freedom of the Beat Generation and the desire for emancipation expressed by American youth in the early 1960s, Janis Joplin left for San Francisco, the epicenter of cultural innovation.

She would live there a freedom of which she would hardly have dared to dream, abandoning herself to all impulses, overcoming without hesitation all the taboos of the time: bisexuality, alcohol, drugs, doing so not only with delight, but with the taste for excess which came naturally from her spontaneous character. A lively, fascinating story of a woman ahead of her time.

Love Me Please will be available June 13, 2021.
