Buttigieg Responds to Homophobic Slurs

A number of outlets have reported mentions of ugly anti-gay incidents since Pete Buttigieg the openly gay mayor of South Bend, IN threw his hat into the ring to be the Democratic presidential nominee in 2020.

His mother talked about the hate mail she’s received.

Buttigieg has largely remained among the fray, but was asked on Thursday about Commissioner Warren Hurst, of Sevier County, TN, who said of Buttigieg, that a gay man is running for president is “about as ugly as you can get.”

According to USA Today, Buttigieg responding to reporter Sharman Sacchetti of Boston TV station WHDH said, :“Well, he was right about one thing. He’s right that there is a gay man running for president. He doesn’t seem to be right about much else.”

Pushed as to whether he’s endured homophobic slurs on the campaign trail, “”Sure,” Buttigieg said, “but it doesn’t speak for most people. And I think the most important thing is to approach with compassion.”
