NEW HERO Meet Somnus, a new LGBTQ+ character debuting in Marvel’s Voices: Pride #1. Says Games Radar: Designed by artist Luciano Vecchio, the character is named Somnus – and the only other thing we know about them is that they are queer, hence their debut in the Pride anthology. Well, we know one other thing – whoever they are, they may be dead or disappeared at this point, judging by the teaser’s text, which reads “Who is Somnus?” with “is” crossed out and replaced with “was”.

Ominous.

Marvel has used the name Somnus before, for a minor character in the Inhumans limited series Silent War, though the new character does not appear to have any connection to the previous user of the name.

FIRST LOOK  The Gay Times: The first photos of Harry Styles in My Policeman have emerged, and fans are going wild.

Taken on set, the photos show the British singer-songwriter in full navy police uniform as the film’s lead character, Tom, alongside David Dawson as his love interest Patrick.

Based on the critically-acclaimed gay novel of the same name from Bethan Roberts, My Policeman follows a schoolteacher called Marion who falls in love with Tom in 1950s Brighton.

ONE MAN SHOW James Cameron Mitchell in Shrill. “I was always afraid of being stuck in a show and not being able to get out, but this was just so easy. There were three women in charge, so now I’m spoiled, I only want to work with women in charge. @aidybryant was the star and one of the creators and executive producers, and she was able to direct me in the middle of doing a scene with me, which I don’t see a man doing. She was so relaxed and to the point, without being a dick. A lot of guys in Hollywood feel that they have to swing their dicks around, because they’re insecure and so you get a sort of Trumpy leadership. But on @shrillhulu it was just so easy for three years. They allowed us to have input with our lines at times and checked in with us on our characters’ arcs. My character originally came from Dan Savage, but they very quickly allowed me to shift him into a former rock singer and record label owner. It was just so pleasurable and it’s sad that it’s over. We didn’t know it was going be over when we shot. We couldn’t really hang out because it was during Covid, so it was a bit of a bummer socially during the shooting of the last season. But we’ve made new friends and I’m sure we’ll all work together in different ways in the future.”

THROWBACK THURSDAY to Brian Kenny on the cover of BUTT Magazine photographed by his longtime love Slava Mogutin. Kenny writes: Hard to believe this photo was taken almost 15 years ago!! #agingmillenial At the time, my friend and brilliant photographer @marcelokrasilcic was doing a photo story for @buttmagazine about NYC’s go-go boys (yes i was happily dancing on many a queer bar in my undies) and shot me and some other go-go beauties I used to work with. I remember at the shoot I trying to channel my inner pin-up girl with the poses. It was a total surprise when a month or so later, I discovered they used one of Marcelo’s portraits of me for the next BUTT magazine cover! Believe it or not, it wasn’t actually my first magazine cover (A portrait by @slavamogutin that he took of me the day after we met in ‘04 had soon ended up on the cover a gay magazine in Russia, and then on another a year later in Berlin), however this BUTT cover was essentially my introduction to the world as BUTT Magazine had an international circulation and enthusiastic following amongst the gays at that time. Amazingly, I still receive comments to this day about those photos and the BUTT towel I appeared on (also shot by Marcelo). It’s a testament to the talent of Marcelo and the enduring popularity of arguably the world’s most popular gay zine, which I found out celebrated their 20th anniversary yesterday AND even better, will be coming back to bring us a new issue! I can’t wait what to see BUTT’s creators @gertjonkers and @jopvanbennekom will show us next!

LIFE CHANGING That’s what director Gregg Araki’s film The Living End was to me when I saw it 29 years ago today at Upstate Films in Rhinebeck, New York.

Tagged with the line: An Irresponsible Film By Gregg Araki it was often described by critics as a “gay Thelma and Louise,” [because Thelma and Louise wasn’t gay enough] the film is an early entry in the New Queer Cinema genre. The Living End was nominated for a Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival in 1992.

The nihilistic plot featured two main characters Luke and Jon. One is a restless and reckless drifter and the other is a relatively timid and pessimistic film critic. Both are gay and HIV positive. After an unconventional meeting, and after Luke kills a homophobic police officer, they go on a road trip with the motto “Fuck everything.”

Yet from the moment they utter fuck everything, they strangely and ironically find meaning and love (albeit the psychotic kind) and so did I.

I would go on to  read such seminal AIDS novels of the time and  became obsessed with James Robert Baker’s Tim and PeteTim and Pete were like a gay, HIV-positive Thelma and Louise, not unlike the protagonists of The Living End. Both stories are set in a dystopian Southern California in the 1990s.

The symmetry between the two works is remarkable. That’s not to suggest that either Araki or Baker cribbed each other. The odds are, given the times, they may not have been aware of each other’s existence. Yet the confluence of two similarly themed pieces of art often speaks to the powerful, cultural undercurrent a subject has at the moment.

Both works were independently labeled irresponsible by critics and activists alike.

THROWBACK THURSDAY to this Dick Giordano classic. The long time art director of DC Comics created the “look book” for the comic giant for many years.

FINE ART This is entitled ‘Tiddy hug ????❤️’ On background: The characters are from the anime movie Promare. Art source.
