SUPPORT BLACK AUTHORS George M. Johnson, whose All Boys Aren’t Blue, is now a best seller but he says we need to keep up the support. Johnson wrote on Twitter: “Just got my royalty statement. As of December 20th, I earned out my advance for All Boys Aren’t Blue. I’m now earning royalties. Thank you all for continuing to support. Continue Supporting Black Authors. So much more in the work. It’s important that Black authors earn out advances as it allows us & others to get better deals. When a YA book like All Boys Aren’t Blue with themes on gender, sex, & masculinity earns out, it allows books with similar themes to get deals using mine as the comparison title.

MUST SEE ANIME Yes ka No ka Hanbun ka (Yes, No or Maybe Half?)

Kunieda Kei is the up-and-coming Prince Charming of the evening news. Inside, he’s the opposite: brash, hot-tempered, and prickly as can be. For years, Kei has successfully juggled his private and professional personas—until a chance meeting with a stop motion animator threatens to bring it all crashing down. But is that really as frightening as the possibility that someone might love and accept both sides of who he is?

This is a movie adaptation of the novel Yes ka, No ka, Hanbun ka? by Michi Ichiho, illustrated by Lala Takemiya.

STAR TREK: DISCOVERY won a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Drama series.

SHORT SHORTS Milo Ventimiglia’s sartorial choice in shorts raised eyebrows and sparked an all too familiar conversation about the appropriate hem line of men’s summer schuckers. GQ says: “Spring has officially arrived, and with it the heart of shorts season. The arrival of shorts season, of course, also means the reemergence of the neverending Great Shorts Length Debate. Last year, a critical mass of Gen Z TikTokers declared that there was only one acceptable short length: five inches. Not only did they proclaim it, but they did so by straight-up roasting anyone in standard seven- and nine-inch inseam pairs you see in cities and suburbs across the country. Enter Milo Ventimiglia, the 43-year-old (a cusp Gen X/Millenial) heartthrob actor, who was photographed leaving the gym the other day in shorts so tiny that they make the TikTok-co-signed five-inch inseam look tame.”

Above: Milo Ventimiglia in West Hollywood, April 5, 2021.

Ventimiglia, who obviously doesn’t skip leg day by the looks of those thighs, was wearing what I can only guess are shorts with between a one- and three-inch inseam. Perhaps even split shorts? (They’re a go-to for serious runners everywhere, and great to work out in.) I understand the feeling: when it comes to gym attire, you want your shorts to get out of the way. But if you think about it, that same concept feels pretty applicable to most summer activities. Who wouldn’t want to feel the freeness of high-cut shorts on a hike, or hanging down by the lake? Also, let’s not overlook Ventimiglia’s high-top Converse with no socks, indeed a tremendous warm-weather style move. The actor probably didn’t think twice about his gym outfit that day, but when you leave the house in tiny shorts like his, you may just find yourself swept up in the Great Shorts Length Debate. With short shorts comes long responsibility.

A spinoff of the 2019 DCEU film Shazam!Black Adam follows Johnson’s eponymous DC anti-hero — the errant champion of the wizard Shazam who was granted powers before Billy Batson. The upcoming film will feature numerous members of the Justice Society of America, including Atom Smasher, Hawkman, Cyclone and Doctor Fate. Black Adam was originally scheduled to open this December. However, it lost its initial release date after the start of production was delayed due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Late last month, Black Adam advertisements took over New York City’s Times Square in order to announce a new release date: July 29, 2022.

BERNIE SANDERS was among several lawmakers who visited union organisers and Amazon workers in Alabama during a closely watched union vote, said he supports efforts to challenge the results after a majority of ballots opposed organising the warehouse in Bessemer. “It takes an enormous amount of courage to stand up and fight back, and they should be applauded,” the Vermont senator said in a statement on social media following the results of the election on Friday. “And let’s be clear, they were up against a company that was willing to spend vast sums of money, and use every kind of tactic there is to defeat them.”
