NO PEACE Hamas, Israel fighting escalates even amid truce efforts. The Associate Press: Hamas sent a heavy barrage of rockets deep into Israel on Thursday, and Israel pounded Gaza with more airstrikes. The relentless escalation of hostilities came even as Egyptian negotiators held in-person talks with the two sides, intensifying efforts at mediation. Previous fighting between Israel and Gaza’s Hamas rulers, including a devastating 2014 war, was largely confined to the impoverished and blockaded Palestinian territory and Israeli communities on the frontier. But this round seems to be rippling farther and wider than at any time since the 2000 Palestinian intifada, or uprising.

While some rocket attacks have reached the Tel Aviv area, Arab and Jewish mobs have rampaged through the streets, savagely beating people and torching cars. Flights have been canceled or diverted away from the country’s main airport.

MARVEL PRIDE variant covers by Phil Jimenez. #Wiccan and #Hulking! This cover sure has been making the rounds; another one of the #LGBTQ #pride???? variants I did for @marvel, to be released in June (sorry forgot the repeat here). Was quite nervous about this one; they’re two of comicdom’s most notable gay characters and some real masters in my biz have tackled them to incredible effect (@lucianovecchioart was my biggest influence/competition, tho!). I really hope I did them justice.
I drew all of these covers on the same #hotpink background with a montage of various gay-themed covers (Northstar’s mostly) that Marvel modified and adapted for the final covers. Including the color art here too, just to show the evolution/transformation that occurs in the #process. Couper Gunn (above) wrote about coming out for Out Sports, saying that being out around his teammates, “just hanging out with them showed me how normal being queer was. After I had finally accepted myself, they were the first four people that I came out to. That winter, before break, I started just talking with them about boys who I found attractive and even something as small as that was empowering and freeing.
At some point during my coming out, I had decided that I wanted to post my coming out publicly because I wanted to avoid being asked every other day, “wait, you’re gay?” But I also had a more selfless motive.

Even then, I realized that as a queer athlete, I had a chance to make a difference in other queer, closeted athletes lives. I thought that a public post would help show other queer athletes that it is possible to be both queer and athletic in a world that quite often tells us that that is not true.
I had my caption for the post written by the end of the spring but I still had one last roadblock, or rather several roadblocks, to overcome. I knew that I didn’t owe anyone a personal phone call telling them that I was out because at the end of the day, in a perfect world, it doesn’t matter. But we’re not in a perfect world. So I made a list.

I was relatively comfortable coming out to my family and my female friends. My biggest fear was coming out to my male friends. I was worried that they would instantly assume that I was attracted to them and that I would lose them as friends. This list was made up of seven guys I wanted to call personally, friends from high school and college, teammates and non-teammates. I was very naïve and I thought I could bang out all seven calls in a weekend. After my first one, I knew that was not possible, even though every call went perfectly.

Despite how well each call went, each one was draining emotionally so it took me longer than expected. It was the last week of July that I made the last phone call to my best friend on my college team and I had completed my list and after receiving so many amazing messages after my coming out post, I finally felt truly free.
It wasn’t that I needed that validation from others telling me that they accepted me or were proud of me. Rather, it was the act of finally screaming to the world my full, unapologetic truth that set me free. I still deal with homophobia in my daily life but I know now that my sexuality was never going to hinder my playing ability — it only enhanced it.

As a sophomore in the fall of 2019, I started all 19 games in our season and played the most minutes of any player on my team. I felt like I was 10 times the player because I had finally come to terms with who I was.
This past season, I was voted captain as a junior by my teammates which was an honor in its own right. But the best part was the captain’s armband that I got to wear. For my 20th birthday last year, my best friend and teammate got me a Premier League match-worn Rainbow Laces pride armband, one worn by all team captains in matches in December to raise awareness of homophobia in football.

The power and pride that I feel when I pull that band up my arm and step out on to the pitch is unparalleled. Along with that, I wear that shirt I wore on that first day of being out and others at camps and in other public places because I know that other people will see me and be reassured that they are in fact normal. I have public TikTok and Instagram accounts because I know that as a queer athlete, I can show closeted athletes that not only is it OK to be queer and an athlete, but that the ability to be proud of who you love and how you identify is empowering.

REPARATIONS Calls for reparations for enslaved men and women — and later, their descendants — have been made in various forms since the end of the Civil War. But these demands have never been met by the federal government.
Talks involve all kinds of different equations and arguments, what’s no longer an argument? They must be made. They must also be accompanied by an admission of wrong doing. And at the very least we do have a fixed value: the cost determined of the ancestor who was enslaved.
NBC News: The National African American Reparations Commission, for example, has a 10-point reparations plan that includes calls for a national apology for slavery and subsequent discrimination; a repatriation program that would allow interested people to receive assistance when exercising their “right to return” to an African nation of their choice; affordable housing and education programs; and the preservation of Black monuments and sacred sites, with the proposals benefiting any person of African descent living in the US.
Other proposals, like one proposed by Andre Perry and Rashawn Ray for the Brookings Institution, would also specifically provide restitution to descendants with at least one ancestor enslaved in the U.S., coupling direct financial payment with plans for free college tuition, student loan forgiveness, grants for down payments and housing revitalization and grants for Black-owned businesses.
“There hasn’t been this amount of stalling for reparations for Japanese Americans, or around the appropriation for restitution for 9/11 victims, or continued support for Holocaust survivors in the U.S.,” Heath said. “Reparation is only seen as a bad word when we’re talking about repair and restitution for Black people.”
“If you think about the generational relationship to enslavement, you find that it doesn’t really feel all that long ago,” Darity said of efforts to frame reparations as solely focused on the past. “But what’s more important is that the effects of the period of enslavement are still felt and still embodied in the kinds of consequences for Black lives today.”
