The show which will begin airing in January takes place after the events of The Suicide Squad.

Gunn told EW that it centers on a team of “black ops combating something catastrophic that’s facing the planet.”

The team, identified as Peacemaker, Harcourt, and Economos team up with three new characters. Chukwudi Iwuji is the group leader Murn (a mercenary under Waller), while Freddie Stroma plays popular comics character Vigilante. “You may not have guessed it but his character is a vigilante!”

Danielle Brooks plays sixth team member Adebayo. “She isn’t always treated the best by the people around her, but despite her differences with Peacemaker, they form a bond,” he explains.

The Peacemaker first appeared as a backup series in Charlton Comics’ espionage-team title Fightin’ 5 #40 (November 1966).

When that series was canceled with issue #41, Peacemaker received his own title lasting five issues cover-dated March to November 1967, with Fightin’ 5 as a backup series and later a low reprint run on the Modern Comics imprint. Some of penciler-inker Pat Boyette’s artwork for a projected sixth issue later appeared online.

Following Charlton Comics’ demise in the mid-1980s, DC Comics acquired The Peacemaker.

After a brief introduction in DC’s groundbreaking 1985 miniseries Crisis on Infinite Earths he starred in a a four-issue mini-series (January–April 1988).

Cena’s role as Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad was the first time the character got the live-action treatment and Cena and Gunn have amassed a fan base from their irreverent Twitter account based on the character.

Peacemaker premieres January 16, 2022 on HBOMax.
