Buttigieg Leads Sanders by Slim Edge in the Last Poll Before Iowa Caucuses

Share

Pete Buttigieg is leading Bernie Sanders for the Democratic presidential nomination  in a new poll on the day of the Iowa Caucuses 19% to 17%.

Caucus goers begin the process Monday.

The caucus is the first hurdle in the nomination process.

According to The Hill, “Former South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) hold a slim lead in a last-minute poll of Iowa Democratic voters released Monday, showing a close-fought race just hours before the caucus doors open. The new poll, conducted for the Democratic group Focus on Rural America by party pollster David Binder, found Buttigieg leading the field with 19 percent of the vote. Sanders trailed with 17 percent of the vote, a statistically insignificant disadvantage.”

Buttigieg has honed his message in Iowa, as the New York Times notes: “When Buttigieg says, ‘So we’re gonna need a president who is capable of dealing with those kinds of issues, rising to meet them with urgent, bold action, and do it in a way that’s actually going to have us more unified, ready to galvanize and not polarize an American majority that insists on that kind of action. And that’s why we have a presidency.’ This is another not-very-subtle shot at Mr. Sanders and Ms. Warren, the idea their progressive proposals would leave the country just as polarized as it is now.”

President Donald Trump called Sanders a “communist” last night in a Fox News interview that ran ahead of the Super Bowl Sunday.

Both Buttigieg and Sanders gained 3 points since the last Focus on Rural America poll, conducted in early January.
