‘Bad Buddy’ Is a Gay Love Story of Friends Turned Foes

Share

Bad Buddy is a new series available stateside that is adapted from the Thai boy love manga series Behind the Scenes.

First announced by GMMTV at their “The New Decade Begins” event in December 2020 it stars Ohm Pawat Chittsawangdee and Nanon Korapat Kirdpan neighbors and mortars enemies Pran (Nanon) and Pat (Ohm), whose families have been at war since before they were born. After being delayed due to the global Covid-19 Pandemic, I can honestly say that the series is more than worth the wait.

With a story that echoes with shades of Romeo and Juliet, Bad Buddy takes a tale as old as time and the ultra-common University theme of almost every BL series and delivers something fresh and fun with two scrappy young men who, even though their families hate one another, can’t deny their emotions connection, it’s just that neither one of them can tell if it’s a good or bad connection.

Directed by Noppharnach Chaiwimol (who previously worked with Ohm in the BL series “He’s Coming to Me”) the narrative, like most of Chaiwimol’s work is well-executed, easy to follow, and handsomely framed. A master storyteller, Chaiwimol is one of my favorite Thai directors whose series “A Tale of a Thousand Stars” and “Dark Blue Kiss” are also highly enjoyable.

One of the best parts of the series is the soundtrack. Music (or lack thereof) can make or break a series or film and Bad Buddy’s synths highlighted with a rock n roll edge lend themselves perfectly to the story of the unlikely duo. Also the ending theme, “Just Friend?” (sung by Nanon) is beautiful – and the music video is fantastic.

While this is Ohm’s fifth BL series, it’s Nanon’s first and the two actors are real-life besties, whose relationship lends itself to the characters because their chemistry is fire. Also, the rest of the cast, which includes Drake Laedeke is just… beautiful.

In short, the series is an A+ but don’t just take my word for it though, at the time of this video’s release, the series already had over 581,000 views since its release Friday.
