U.S. Requests Greek Naval Assistance in Protecting Freedom of Navigation in the Persian Gulf

IN AN ominous sign that tensions between Iran and the United States show no signs of deescalating any time soon, the United States has made a formal request to the Greek government to assist in its efforts.

Greece has among the largest shipping fleets in the world.

Kathimerini, Greece’s largest news daily, reports, “Washington has reportedly asked Greece to make a contribution to a multinational naval force that will monitor the Persian Gulf in order to protect the freedom of navigation.”

Kathimerini understands that the American request, made a few days ago, referred to assistance either with a large naval unit – a frigate – or with an aerial intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance tool.”
