A NEW ERA Congratulations President Elect Joe Biden! After nearly five tense days, Joe Biden has been declared the winner of the 2020 Presidential election against Donald Trump. The Associated Press reports: It was the most bitterly fought U.S. election in living memory, stalked by a raging pandemic that has claimed more than 230,000 lives, the loss of millions of jobs and a sustained reckoning over racial injustice.

“It’s time for America to unite. And to heal,” President-elect Joe Biden said after he defeated Donald Trump to become the 46th president of the United States.

Democrat Biden vanquished his Republican foe after a campaign as bitter and divisive as Trump’s own presidential term, Jonathan Lemire and Zeke Miller report.

Biden said he was humbled by the victory. Trump, who said in the days leading up to the election that he couldn’t stand the thought of losing, becomes a one-term president. He refused to concede and threatened unspecified further legal action.

MAMALA Vice President Kamala Harris is now the first woman Vice President in the history of the United States and the first woman of color.

Harris, who identifies as Black and South Asian, has two immigrant parents. Her father from Jamaica, is a prominent professor at Stanford, and her mother was of Tamil decent, and an immigrant from India.

Harris credits much of her success to her mother, who passed away in 2009. The Senator once called Shyamala Gopalan Harris, “the reason for everything.”

USA Today reports, “The vice-presidential glass ceiling has been broken. California Sen. Kamala Harris will make history as the first woman elected vice president, now that Joe Biden has won enough states to capture the White House. Biden beat Donald Trump four years after Hillary Clinton came up short in her bid to be the first female president. “We did it. We did it Joe,” a smiling Harris told Biden by phone in a video she tweeted out. “You’re going to be the next president of the United States.”

“This election is about so much more than @JoeBiden  or me. It’s about the soul of America and our willingness to fight for it. We have a lot of work ahead of us,” she wrote in a separate tweet.” Let’s get started.”

Harris’ husband, entertainment lawyer Doug Emhoff, will be the first “second gentleman.”

SPONTANEOUS CELEBRATIONS broke out around the country after the election was settled Saturday morning. CUNY Journalism Student Aaron Tremper posted to Instagram, “1,000 people gathered outside of Trump International Tower in Columbus Circle to celebrate the election President-Elect Joe Biden and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris.”

CBD FOR STEVE KORNACKI? Columbia Care is offering @SteveKornacki a yearlong supply of #CBD for his tireless work. Sometimes you need more than a nap and a diet soda. We think@AliVelshiwould agree. #TrackingKornacki

Vulture reports that Kornacki, who OUT Magazine called the ‘Gay MVP’ on Electoral results, spent most of the last night furiously working away at his big electoral map and occasionally being caught on the “Kornacki Cam,” and according to the Washington Post, it wasn’t until it was nearly noon that he even took his first break.

“He has not slept since he was on Morning Joe yesterday,” a spokesperson told the Post, following up a half-hour later to say that Kornacki was “taking a break” from screen duty — his first break. Around noon, his colleague Ali Velshi stepped in, telling anchor Ari Melber, “We have removed him forcibly from the building … He’s in a room with pillow, blankets, and warm milk.”

MSNBC also posted a somewhat concerning video of Kornacki on said break, apparently still in a building, but at least out of the studio. There he says thanks for the kind messages, but he clearly needs to be forced to nap.”

HERO Stacy Abrams efforts in Georgia may have been the lynchpin in turning the state blue. “If Georgia puts Biden-Harris over the top the administration and everyone who voted for it will be indebted to Stacey Abrams for an idea she had a decade ago. Here’s my profile of her from last year,” Jelani Cobb reported in The New Yorker.

Not only that, but Abrams (like colleague Pete Buttigieg) is a Trekker!

Nerdist reports, “Last year, for the Now This YouTube channel, Abrams revealed her Star Trek bonafides. She did a deep dive into why she loves the timeless franchise so much, and how it helped shape her world view and career. You can watch the full video below.

Writer Eric Diaz says, “Stacey Abrams is a national treasure. And right now, people are realizing just how much so. Mainly thanks to her efforts to get 800,000 new voters registered in her home state of Georgia, and fighting voter suppression. She’s a politician, a lawyer, and served in the Georgia House of Representatives as minority leader. Oh, and she’s also a notable geek. Specifically, she’s a huge Star Trek fan.”

GAY PRIDE After over two months of zero new cases of Coronavirus, Taiwan celebrated Gay Pride last weekend.

NBC reported, “Taiwan hosted the biggest in-person LGBTQ Pride event of post-Covid 2020.The event drew around 130,000 people, reinforcing Taiwan’s image as a beacon of gay rights in Asia and one of the world’s safest places amid the pandemic. In a year in which many global gay pride events have been canceled or moved online, Taiwan’s parade kicked off from outside Taipei City Hall, as scheduled, on the last Saturday in October. Organizers said they expected it to be the biggest Pride event to take place this year since the World Health Organization declared a global pandemic in March. The event was a colorful testament to Taiwan’s successful control of the coronavirus. The island of 24 million people has seen just 554 confirmed Covid-19 cases, including seven deaths, and no lockdowns. Taiwan’s last locally transmitted infection was recorded in April.”
