One News Cycle: Four Mayor Petes

Share

Pete Buttigieg already has at least three apocryphal narratives that live separately from the man and differ depending on the source.

As we head into the final stretch of the countdown to the Iowa caucuses, Pete Buttigieg  the Mayor of South Bend, IN and the first openly gay candidate with a  realistic shot at the Democratic nomination, has become a lightning rod, especially on the left. But if you’ve had a hard time reconciling the contradictory positions attacking him, you’re not the only one.

Culled from over a  less then 12 hour period yesterday, I present three legitimate written pieces on Buttigieg with startlingly different points of view. They do represent, however, three apocryphal anecdotes that have become almost indelibly attached to Buttigieg: 1.) He’s SO NORMAL, AND SO NICE! 2.) HE’S. A BAD GAY! HE’S AN UN-WOKE WHITE MAN! and 3) A REASONABLE PERSON GENUINELY CONCERNED WITH THE STATE OF THE WORLD.

Draw your own conclusion.

  1. BUZZFEED: YOU WANTED NORMAL? You wanted same-sex marriage, you now have Pete Buttigieg. “To a lot of progressive queer people, Buttigieg’s campaign symbolizes everything the marriage-focused mainstream gay rights movement has failed to deliver.”

“….as monumental as a Buttigieg presidency would be for gay visibility — and it would indeed be monumental — his win would also be a constant reminder of how much the gay rights movement had to give up in order to make it this far. Buttigieg’s ascendance is at least in part a byproduct of the least ambitious, most compromised impulse of a decades-long fight for queer rights winning out over demands for something better.”

2. AMERICABLOG RESPONSE. Pete Buttigieg is a bad gay? Sigh. Here we go again. ‘Pete’s other “problem,” that he’s a gay white man, has deep roots in the woker-than-thou left. Lots of newer LGBT activists have outright animus towards white gay men, claiming, among other things, that white gay men never did anything for the LGBT movement when, in many cases, they carried the lion’s share of the activist burden, including sacrificing their lives.’

4. MAYOR PETE ON CBS THIS MORNING: “In Iowa, he’s in a tight race with the top candidates, and a poll in New Hampshire has him leading. Buttigieg on CBS This Morning to discussed the impeachment hearings, what his record shows in helping minority communities, and how he plans to tackle the student debt crisis.”
