BOOM! Zack Snyder’s Justice League finally debuted on HBO Max this week and its biggest reveal? That Victor Stone/Cyborg is at its heart. Ray Fisher wrote on. Twitter: As a Black man that grew up with an absent father, #Cyborg ’s story has always hit differently for me. Family and reconciliation are some of my biggest takeaways from #ZackSnydersJusticeLeague It’s not just comic book movie—it’s a study of the human condition.”

Gene Park at the Washington Post tweeted: Ray Fisher’s anger and pain over his experience with Whedon feels justified. Cyborg is central to the story, both in plot and its emotional spirit. Whedon removing all of it is actually angering. Fisher puts in a stellar performance.

MARVELOUS The Falcon and the Winter Soldier premiered on Disney+ Friday. It was good. Coming on the heels of WandaVision it of course felt slower and servile. Arts Technica: This is now Marvel Studios’ second post-“unsnappening” series, and it’s the first to take a more predictable tack on the fallout throughout the Marvel universe. Endgame set this new TV series up in shameless corporate-synergy fashion when Chris Evans handed his Captain America shield to Anthony Mackie (The Falcon) and Sebastian Stan (The Winter Soldier), essentially telling audiences, “Two superheroes will continue a specific plotline—so stay tuuuuned.”

The real reason this episode works can be summed up by one exchange in Barnes’ therapy session, in which he sighs and lets his guard down for a moment. “I just went from one fight to another for 90 years,” he says about his struggle with processing emotions. His doctor pauses for a beat: “Now that you’ve stopped fighting, what do you want?”

This two-line exchange sums up F&WS‘s debut.

BREAKOUT Joaquin Torres of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Men’s Health says: The MCU may have just introduced one of its young new heroes in the character of Joaquín Torres (played by Danny Ramirez). Early on in the first episode of The Falcon and the Winter SoldierTorres has already become Sam Wilson’s (Anthony Mackie) right-hand guy, providing intelligence during the opening fight against Batroc the Leaper and continuing to inform Wilson on developments with the “Flag Smashers,” an anonymous group bent on eradicating borders.

We already know Marvel is setting up the Young Avengers. Both Billy and Tommy—introduced in WandaVision—and Kate Bishop—to be introduced later this year in Hawkeye—are members of the comic team. And though Torres doesn’t appear in the group during his comics run (yet), it’s not impossible Marvel is slowly assembling its next slate of leading heroes. We say bring Ramirez on board. He’s already looking like a fan favorite.

EZRA MILLER’s WEINER We have to talk about Justice League‘s hot dog moment. Ezra Miller’s Flash gets to save Iris West and grab lunch on the run in one of the most random scenes in Zack Snyder’s Justice League which debuted on HBO Max Thursday.

i09: “It dances onto the scene. It is given focus, as it reaches escape velocity and jettisons from its bun, the wiener is free-falling, spinning slowly, graceful and raw in both its majesty and perhaps the pork by-products within it. We spend moments with the wiener; we know it, it knows us, we become one with its plight. It requires salvation as much as Iris does in this moment, and Barry Allen is its savior. And so, as he moves Iris’ hair out of her face with one hand, Barry reaches out to the wiener with a similar intimacy, pulling it from certain doom and putting it…in his pocket.”

Iris West? Saved. The wiener? Saved. Well, until it presumably gets eaten by some dogs. It’s one of the most ridiculous moments in the movie. It’s incredibly silly. It’s deeply indulgent, in a film that is nothing but  indulgence. But it’s also just…kind of brilliant. Because what is Zack Snyder’s approach to superheroes, if not this wiener?

OH YEAH Not the Kool Aid man!

TWEET OF THE DAY George Takei on Vladmir Putin. “Putin isn’t really a boxer. But he is a killer.” Oh myyyy.

The New York Times: The Kremlin described the U.S. president’s response to an interview question as “very bad,” and recalled its ambassador to “analyze what needs to be done” about the countries’ relations.

President Vladimir V. Putin dryly wished President Biden “good health” on Thursday after the American leader assented to a description of his Russian counterpart as a “killer,” and long-running tensions morphed into a furious exchange of trans-Atlantic taunts.

NAOMI Ava DuVernay has found her lead! DuVernay wrote on Twitter: Excited to announce that Kaci Walfall is DC Comic’s magnificent NAOMI! She’s 16 and wildly talented. I’m fortunate to be working with her, along with our new cast members Cranston Johnson, Camila Moreno and Alexander Wraith. The dynamo @amandamarsalis is our director. Let’s go!

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS up with Dante and Romeo.

NEW RULES Bill Maher explores the woke philosophy of “equality of outcomes,” and how it plays into an increasingly vapid, entitled, famous-for-nothing culture.
