DISPATCH from Dr. Charlie Franchino: While many of us think Trump has completely bungeld the pandemic, his polls numbers tell a different story in American’s perception of the job he is doing. He has been near the highest approval rating of his presidency. It’s not hard to understand why. The media is again doing its job to ensure his reelection in several ways.
They cover his daily 2 hour briefings from end to end. Trump can’t hold in person rallies and these briefings have filled the void.While his rallies got some coverage now they reach all Americans. He takes pleasure in bashing the press, lies with impunity and bullies those on stage with him. Afterwards we get the same CNN/MSNBC commentators in high dudgeon. Why not just cut to the briefing when the scientists are talking? Then compile a video of his lies and refute them with facts and no bluster.
Hydroxchloroquine- I have no idea if this drug works yet NYC is giving it to nearly every patient who enters a hospital. Trump shamelessly promotes the drug as a near cure. Like it or not it gives people hope. Yet when CNN and MSNBC cover the issue they reflexively put out their own disinformation. Nearly every commentator and scientist decry the use of the drug as “dangerous” and it could kill you. They almost always fail to mention that those at risk have underlying cardiac or kidney issues. And if a drug has a fatality profile why do any of us take any drug at all? I’m on a statin which are among the most prescribed drugs in this country and they have dramatically lowered incidence and death from heart disease. Yet all the statins have a fatality profile. Should we all stop taking them? Viewers understand this and it just looks like politics over science. It gives Trump an opening to discredit experts which has been a hallmark of his presidency.
Economy-Everyone wants the country opened back up. Trump continually teases a re-opening date and again it gives people hope. Cue the scientists who insist we must be closed down for 18-36 months and barely a mention of the economic pain it will cause.It’s easy for Trump to portray the opposition as supporting economic catastrophe.. Seems to me Cuomo gets it right here-set a tentative opening date and move the goal post if necessary.
This pandemic is tailor made for an authoritarian president. He is already undermining the credibility of the November elections. He refuses to ramp testing up lest we find out how many Americans are really infected. He blames everyone else for his failures even though all of those he criticizes have been doing exemplary jobs. And it’s all working thanks to our lame media. Russiagate, Ukrainegate were strikes one and two and the pandemic is strike 3 for the resistance. It’s not too late for the media to wake up and stop ensuring his re-election but if in 2016 they lived in a liquid bubble the media of 2020 live in a hardshell one. FiveThirtyEight is tracking Donald Trump’s approval ratings throughout his presidency.
