Chicago Area 14-Year-Old Charged with Hate Crime for ‘Slave for Sale’ Post on CL

A disturbing post on Craigslist listing a “Slave for Sale,” has been uncovered by DuPage County investigators to be a 14-year-old white student from the Tony Chicago suburb of Naperville. The listing depicted a fellow student who is Black.

According to the Chicago Tribune, “The 14-year-old, who is white, is charged with two counts of committing a hate crime and one count of disorderly conduct. The Tribune is not naming the youth because he has been charged as a juvenile. He appeared with his parents.”

The incident began Thursday in the school lunchroom, Assistant State’s Attorney Lee Roupas told Judge Anthony Coco. The youth is alleged to have taken a photo of the student, also a 14-year-old freshman, as they sat at the same lunch table. The youth then posted the photo on the Craisglist site with the “for sale” caption along with other offensive language, Roupas said.
