“It’s like talking about porn at the dinner table,” comedian Chelsea Handler says at one point during her new Netflix doc Hello Privilege, It’s Me Chelsea premiering September 15th.
Handler dealt a lot with this subject in her last book, Life Will Be the Death of Me: . . . and you too! and seems to be the comedian’s cri de cœur of late. She says she has to talk to other white people about it, not just asking Black people what’s right and wrong.
Handler travels around the country speaking with a wide range of people on the topic of race including fellow comedians Kevin Hart, Tiffany Haddish, and W. Kamau Bell, anti-racism writer and activist Tim Wise, a Republican women’s group in Orange County, CA, college students at an open mic night, and her former high school boyfriend in New Jersey.
