DEMARO is an emerging, openly gay dancehall artist who’s ready to risk the adversity associated with the Caribbean’s stance on homosexuality, in the pursuit of his music career. Jamaica, a country so beautiful, is still plagued by it’s negative ideoglogy of the LGBTQ community. IN MEMORIAM Writer Brian Keith Jackson’s last Instagram post of the year was dedicated to gay teen Nigel Shelby who committed suicide earlier this year. “Last post of the year. I’ve had a great many memories this year, most, of which, I keep to myself. Still, as I sit in my hotel room, at 3:20am, trying to figure out what things I should show, my mind kept returning to Nigel Shelby. REST IN PEACE Visionary literary editor Sonny Mehta. Says the New York Times, “The urbane and astute head of Alfred A. Knopf who guided one of the book world’s most esteemed imprints to new heights through a blend of prize-winning literature by Toni Morrison and Cormac McCarthy among others and blockbusters such as Fifty Shades of Grey and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, has died at age 77. Mehta, the husband of author Gita Mehta, died Monday at a Manhattan hospital. According to Knopf, the cause was complications from pneumonia.
“Mehta’s contributions to the world of letters and publishing are without precedent,” a statement from the publisher read Tuesday. “His exacting standards – in editorial, production, design, marketing, and publicity – were a beacon to the book industry and beyond.”
The bearded, chain-smoking Mehta spoke carefully and chose wisely, helping Knopf thrive even as the industry faced the jarring changes of corporate consolidation, the demise of thousands of independent stores and the rise of e-books.

AUTHOR MADELINE MILLER talked to PBS NewsHour about her novel Circe. Her previous novel The Song of Achilles revealed her love of classical Greece. Miller joined Jeffrey Brown to answer reader questions on Circe. Miller says her fascination with the character of Circe goes back to when she was a child. “The first time I read The Odyssey, I had been really excited, because I knew there was this witch who turned men into pigs. And I thought, ooh, wow, that sounds like a really interesting and meaty and complex character, which are kind of thin on the ground in general in Greek mythology. But when I got there, I was really frustrated about how sort of flattened the portrait was and how it was really still just Odysseus’ story. And so there was this piece of me from the very moment, the first time I read The Odyssey as a 13-year-old, that really wanted to go in and explore this character and find out, well, who is she? Why is she turning men into pigs, which is the most notable things she does in The Odyssey, but which is never addressed at all.”
