Jaxson Green, 11, is now home and doing well, but in November, he was in the hospital after he caught a seemingly mild case of COVID-19. His mother, Heather Green, says at first, he was only sick for a couple days before he recovered and headed back to school.  “Before this happened to us, I truly thought it was more of a hoax,” she said. “Wear your masks when you’re out and about, properly, and maintain your social distancing.”

TWEET OF THE DAY Seth Rogen shot back at critics and said it isn’t a Twitter “feud.” Rogen wrote: Ted Cruz tried to overthrow our government. He inspired a deadly mob to storm the Capitol. And I think that deserves ridicule. So fuck him.

TRUMP WAS TROLLED by a plane trailing sky banners flying over his Mar-a-Lago resort on Sunday that said:“TRUMP WORST PRESIDENT EVER” and another that read “TRUMP YOU PATHETIC LOSER GO BACK TO MOSCOW.”

Laurence Leamer, author of Mar-a-Lago: Inside the Gates of Power at Donald Trump’s Presidential Palace, says members of the private golf resort are leaving in droves. Leamer told MSNBC’s Alex Witt: “I’ve talked to a bunch of people the last couple of days. A lot of people have quit Mar-a-Lago. … Many of the members, they’re not going there very often because it’s a very dispirited place. It’s a sad place for Trump to be hanging out. It’s not what it was. They’re walking away from him. Even here, people don’t like him.”

AOC told Missouris’ representative Jeff Hawley he should resign. Ocasio-Cortez, citing his involvement inciting the Capitol Hill riot on January 6th, wrote on Twitter: You were given prime space to say this in a billionaire-run rag that specifically amplifies right-wing views, part of a entire subsidized industry of right-wing outlets. You’re not “muzzled,” Hawley. You’re just deeply unpopular, and aided insurrection. And you need to resign.

Hawley’s op-ed appeared in the New York Post (owned by billionaire Rupert Murdoch) Sunday and claimed that he was a victim of “cancel culture.”

PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN reversed the Trump administrations ban on allowing people of  transgender experience to join the military. The president announced that he had signed the executive order in a tweet: “Today, I repealed the discriminatory ban on transgender people serving in the military. It’s simple: America is safer when everyone qualified to serve can do so openly and with pride.”

The White House wrote in a fact sheet on the signing: “President Biden believes that gender identity should not be a bar to military service, and that America’s strength is found in its diversity. America is stronger, at home and around the world, when it is inclusive. The military is no exception. Allowing all qualified Americans to serve their country in uniform is better for the military and better for the country because an inclusive force is a more effective force. Simply put, it’s the right thing to do and is in our national interest.”

HARRIET TUBMAN will replace Andrew Jackson on the twenty-dollar bill says Biden.

American abolitionist leader Harriet Tubman (1820 – 1913) who escaped slavery by marrying a free man and led many other slaves to safety using the abolitionist network known as the underground railway.

CBS News: During a Monday press conference, White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters that the Biden administration will recommit to the process of placing an image of American abolitionist and political activist Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill, replacing former president Andrew Jackson. The move was first initiated by Barack Obama during his time as president but the initiative was met with frequent delays by the Trump administration.

Tubman, born in Maryland, escaped the plantation where she was enslaved and went to Pennsylvania in 1849. Over the following decade, she made more than a dozen trips to Maryland to free enslaved persons, according to the National Parks Service.

Trump’s Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin announced in 2019 that the $20 bill featuring Ms Tubman would not be introduced on time in 2020. The unveiling had been timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment, which granted women the right to vote.

Preliminary designs of the note that were obtained by The New York Times revealed that — before Mr. Trump took office — conceptual work on a bill bearing Tubman’s likeness on the front and a statue of Jackson on the back was already underway.

TWEET OF THE DAY TOO Seth Rogen again, to Ted Cruz: “Your lies got people killed. You have blood on your hands.”

Forbes‘ Jesse Damiani retweeted Rogen with the comment: Not a single politician who stoked the fire of the insurrection has been held to account. That’s only going to make them bolder in their next attempt.

25 YEARS ago the long running musical Rent debuted. Star Trek: Discovery’s Anthony Rapp wrote on Twitter Monday, “25 years ago today, we lost our friend & colleague Jonathan Larson. That night, we shared his words & music w/a small audience at @NYTW79. Here’s an @npr story about that. 13,140,000 Minutes: It’s Been 25 Years Since The First Performance Of Rent.

NPR: On Jan. 25, 1996, a new rock musical by a little-known writer, Jonathan Larson, gave its first performance. Friends and family filed into a small off-Broadway theater to see Rent. The show was a retelling of La Boheme, set on the Lower East Side of New York, as people were dying of AIDS. It became an international phenomenon, winning the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award, among others, but the performance almost didn’t happen. Early that morning, Larson died of an aortic aneurysm. I spoke with some of the people who were there that night. “It really begins and ends with Jonathan’s writing as a great composer and a great lyricist,” says Tim Weil, who was the show’s music director/keyboard player/arranger. “He knew as much about Billy Joel’s piano playing as he knew about Sondheim’s lyric writing. He was really just extraordinary.”

Rapp was hired to play Mark Cohen, a documentary filmmaker. “I’ve always felt that Mark was the closest sort of stand-in for Jonathan,” he says. “Jonathan himself was a cis-het HIV-negative man who was watching what was happening around him and responding to it and trying to find a way to channel the grief and anger and hopelessness that he was feeling into something positive. And Mark is very much doing that.”

“There was an incredible mixture of life, matching art, matching life,” actor Anthony Rapp recalls of Rent’s first performance. “The distance between what we were experiencing ourselves, and as the characters was, like, tissue paper thin.” Joan Marcus

BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL  DC Comics’ company-wide crossover event Future State presents a future filled with Wonder Women, including the long-awaited return of Nubia. Nubia is the Wonder Woman that completes the trio and the character has quite the history in the DCU, created by Robert Kanigher and Don Heck in 1973’s Wonder Woman #204. Revealed to be the secret twin sister of Diana created by Hippolyta, Nubia was raised Mars, the Roman God of War. Appearing in Immortal Wonder Woman #1, Nubia reveals that she hasn’t been on Themyscira for some time while continuing to defend Amazon interests abroad.

Back in October, Author L. L. McKinney (Nubia: Real One, A Blade So Black) and Alitha Martinez (Represent) revealed the first look at Nubia over at CBR

“So many @DCComics fans have been waiting for this one, so let’s. GO! Daughter of Hippolyta. Sister to Diana. Princess of the Amazons. And now? Wonder Woman,” McKinney wrote on Twitter. “Nubia as who she was in all her original glory. Y’all know I HAD to bring our girl to the main stage.”

Martinez’s tweet was a simple, “Finally!”

NEW DOCU-SERIES Killing In Thy Name explores the dark historical origins of Rage Against the Machine’s 1991 anthem “Killing in the Name” and “the fiction known as whiteness.”

Rolling Stone: The 15-minute film Killing in Thy Name, a collaboration with the arts collective the Ummah Chroma, features a teacher educating a small group of students about “the fiction known as whiteness” as well as the United States’ history of racial and social oppression.

“Living in the States, you’re living in one of the most brutal societies in the history of the world,”  Machine’s frontman, Zack de la Rocha says in an archival interview within the film. “The country who inherited the genocide of the Native American people. A country which participated in slavery. Any society or any government or any system that is set up solely to profit a wealthy class while the majority of the people toil and suffer and sell their labor power, so long as that system’s only true motive is profit interest and not the maintenance and the betterment of the population, to meeting human needs, then that society should not stand. It should be challenged and questioned and overthrown.”

CAPITOL RIOTER Garret Miller says he was following Trump’s orders, apologizes to AOC for threat. “Miller, who is being held without bail, is one of dozens of people charged with participating in the riot, which began shortly after Trump urged supporters to pressure Congress to reject Joe Biden’s election.

In a statement released by defense attorney Clinton Broden, Miller said he had been motivated by Trump’s false claims about having been cheated out of reelection by ballot fraud and said, “I am ashamed of my comments.”

Miller said: “I want to publicly apologize to Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez and the Capitol police officers. I have always supported law enforcement and I am ashamed by my comments.”

KICK ASS AIDS activist and writer Tez Anderson wrote on Facebook: “Get ready. I could barely make it through the trailer. But look forward to seeing it soon.”

Anderson was referring to the trailer for the US debut of It’s A Sin. HBO Max debuted the official trailer and key art today for the new Max Original, It’s A Sin. All five episodes of the limited series debut Thursday, February 18 on HBO Max.

The new series from Queer As Folk creator Russell T. Davies is about a group of gay friends living in London in 1981, unaware that the AIDS epidemic is about to shatter and upend their lives. “Ritchie (Olly Alexander), Roscoe (Omari Douglas) and Colin (Callum Scott Howells) are young lads, strangers at first, leaving home at 18 and heading off to London with hope and ambition and joy… and walking straight into a virus that most of the world ignores. Year by year, episode by episode, crossing the whole decade, their lives change as the mystery of that illness starts as a rumor, then a threat, then a terror, and then something that binds them together in the fight.”

Anderson is the founder of Let’s KICK ASS and Long-Term Survivor’s Day, which raise awareness for the men and women who have been living with the disease since the advent of the epidemic, many of whom were predicted would be dead long ago. In his manifesto about the organization, Anderson says, “We’re Long-Term Survivors of the AIDS pandemic, the most devastating health crisis of the modern era. With courage and compassion, we survived the darkest days of the plague. Without access to effective treatments, we were forced to rely on each other and ourselves.”

Above: Anderson in San Francisco December 2020 via Facebook.

He continues: “We never imagined we’d live this long let’s make the most of the time we have left, understanding that our numbers are in the tens of thousands. We strive not to survive merely, but to thrive in meaningful, productive, independent and connected lives free of stigma, ageism, and discrimination regardless of age, gender, race or ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity or socioeconomic circumstance.”

And watch the HBO Max trailer for It’s A Sin below.

And #ICYMI listen to Years and Years’ Olly Alexander’s beautiful cover of the epynomous Pet Shop Boys’ song below.

The song is such a classic that it was difficult to imagine anything that would be above serviceable vis-a-vis the original. But in the hands of Alexander, the acoustic cover simultaneously strikes a melodically nostalgic, yet lyrically haunting and relevant note, while his vocals raise it to operatic levels in scope.
